Wetzel Family Olive Oil

When Harry and Maggie Wetzel purchased the old Cyrus Alexander homestead in 1962 they discovered a mission olive tree on the property that historians believe was planted in the 1840's by Cyrus Alexander. The big, old gnarly tree still stands next to the Wetzel Family home and continues to produce olives.

That tree encouraged AVV founder Hank Wetzel to plant more olive trees. Every year he adds a few more to the hillsides above the caves and around the vineyards. Over time the trees planted included the classic Tuscan varietals, a few Spanish and French trees.

Today the mix of trees on the Wetzel Family Estate bear fruit that we harvest in November/December. We have the olives cold pressed to produce a rich spicy oil.

Visitors to the winery often enjoy this special oil with a little bread at meals. Family partner Harry Wetzel says he likes to drizzle it over a caprese salad with fresh from the garden summer tomatoes, a little basil, thinly sliced red onion, fresh mozzerella and a touch of balsamic vinegar.
