Easy-to-use knobs allow changing handlebar height to match the operator's size and preference:
- Three height-adjustment positions are provided.
- No tools are required to make the adjustment.
The handle can be easily folded down for compact storage or transport.
The 190 cc, four-cycle engine is manufactured to John Deere standards for quality and reliability. It has 8.75 lb-ft* gross torque per SAE J1940 for excellent performance. The engine is equipped with electric start, and a zone-start recoil-rope starting system is included as a backup.

Overhead-valve design provides the following:
- Cooler running temperature

- The fuel-tank cap contains a fuel stabilizer that drips into the fuel tank as the mower is operated, to ensure fresh fuel for quick starts at all times.
- Zone-start system requires the engine be started from behind the handlebar using the key switch or the extended recoil rope while holding down the operator-presence control, also located on the handlebar.
- When the control is released, the engine and blade stop.
- High torque is provided for tough mowing conditions.
- Engine is designed to meet California Air Resources Board (CARB) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) air emission standards.
- A dependable splash-lubrication system protects the engine's moving parts from wear.

A wide handlebar with conveniently located controls enhances operator comfort and productivity.
The engine speed is preset at 3350 rpm:
- Ensures a proper setting for smooth operation
- Gives the best cut quality
The controls are easy to operate:
- Light hand pressure on the zone control keeps the engine running.
- The zone control can be held by one hand from any position on the handle.
- Once the control is released, the engine and blade will stop.
