Description
Vintage "Old Sleepy Eye" ceramic pitcher. This is a very rare signed pitcher that was created by the Western Stoneware Company in Monmouth, Illinois. This piece is made up of a beautiful glazed ceramic material which has a deep blue glaze over textured trees, teepee tents, and a large design of "Old Sleepy Eye" himself. "Old Sleepy Eye" is the nickname for Ishtahumba, which means eyelids drooping. Ishtahumba was the real name of the Chief of the Lower Sisseton Sioux Indian tribe. These collectibles were produced from Illinois mined clay from the 1890's to 1937. The design is reminiscent of Early American decor and is in high demand as there are few pieces remaining, especially ones that are marked. This pitcher is marked with the "Monmouth" stamp which signifies it's creation from the Monmouth, Illinois stoneware company. The pitcher measures 8" in length and is 6" in diameter. There is only one small crack at the tip of the spout and some noticeable crazing but cracking and crazing are normal for these pieces and other than this the pitcher is in great overall condition.
