Tunneling

Super Excavators began tunneling many years ago. When we began, it mostly involved hand mining tunnels. In the early 1990's we started doing larger scale projects using TBM's. (Tunnel Boring Machines) We completed a large project for the City of Kenosha in the early 1990's and a couple of projects for the City of Milwaukee in the late 1990's. We have experience in both soft ground and rock tunneling ranging in size from four foot diameter to fourteen foot diameter. Ground conditions range from hard stiff clay to saturated sand/silt to dolomite at 20,000+ psi. Tunnel lining applications include jacking pipe, pre-cast segmental lining, as well as ribs and lagging with reinforced concrete pipe lining grouted in place.

Super Excavators, Inc. completed our first Microtunnel project for the City of Brookfield in 2001. We have used this technology for most of our tunnels under 100" ever since. In the last four years Super Excavators, Inc. has Microtunneled over 40,000 lineal feet. We adapt our MTBM (Microtunnel Boring Machines) to the ground we are working in. Our capabilities include soils ranging from wet sands and silts/organics to cobbles/boulders and even solid bedrock. Recently Super Excavators, Inc. has purchased a pilot-tube Microtunnel system and we have set an Akkerman pilot-tube record for the 490 foot long 24" HOBAS pipe drive completed in June of 2009.
