Description
Tifdwarf offers a finer blade and its putting surface can be compared with many creeping bentgrasses. Tifdwarf is highly adapted to heat, saline or sodic soils, heavy traffic and low mowing. Because it overseeds and transitions well, it is highly effective for year-round play in areas where summer temperatures exceed 100 degrees F. Verticutting and topdressing are needed to balance the aggressiveness of Tifdwarf, but its mat is the perfect base for overseeded winter grasses.

Description

Tifdwarf is a hybrid bermudagrass cross of Cynodon transvaalensis X Cynodon dactylon. Tifdwarf has smaller and shorter leaves, stems and internodes than TifGreen. The leaf blades are dark green in color and have the finest texture of the hybrid bermudagrasses.

Uses

Tifdwarf is used for golf course greens more than any of the other hybrid bermudagrasses. It is also used on bowling greens and tennis courts.

Characteristics

Temperature range of adaptation - as with the other Tif-Varieties, Tifdwarf performs well in climates within 45 degrees latitude to the equator. Tifdwarf is not as winter hardy as Tifway and Tifgreen, and performs best at altitudes lower than 1,500 feet.

Water Quality Tolerance

Tifdwarf is the most tolerant of the Tif-bermudas to salt concentrations. On a suitably drained profile Tifdwarf can tolerate soil concentrations in excess of 4000 ppm total salts.

Drought Tolerance

Tifdwarf will survive droughts with minimal water availability. One to two inches (25 to 50 mm) of available water weekly to the plant will provide an acceptable turf surface. Tifdwarf will survive at 1/2 inch (12 mm) irrigation per week, dependent on soil physics.

Traffic and Wear Tolerance

Tifdwarf is tolerant to traffic and mechanical wear and tear. It can withstand aggressive cultural practices better than the ultradwarf varieties.

Weed Tolerance

Tifdwarf forms a dense turf which will prevent the presence of many turf weeds when properly maintained. Tifdwarf tolerates application of herbicides at labeled rates for greens.

Soil Fertility Range

Tifdwarf grows best in soils with a pH range of 5.5 to 7.0. Soil levels of 100 pounds/acre (112 kg./hectare)of phosphorous and 150 to 200 pounds/acre (168 to 224 kg/hectare) potassium will provide a healthy growing plant. Nitrogen applied at 1 pound/1000 sq. ft. per month will provide a healthy plant when combined with the recommended phosphorous and potassium.
