Solar Power Batteries
Since PV panels can only produce electricity when the sun is shining, batteries are the critical component for solar power systems that need to operate independently from the utility grid. Batteries are also used for back-up power, when the utility grid isn't operating the PV system can power critical systems. Because advanced battery technology such as lithium-ion and nickel-metal-hydride are cost-prohibitive for PV battery systems, most systems are designed with lead-acid battery technology that has been used for more than 100 years. Since most automobiles use lead acid batteries, advancements in the efficiency and lifespan of these batteries are still being made. These batteries are recycled at the end of their useful life—they won't end up in landfill!
Conergy supplies batteries from these leading manufacturers:
- Rolls/Surrette
- Concorde
Solar Power Charge Controllers
Solar charge controllers are used in virtually all solar power systems that incorporate batteries. Because overcharging batteries can reduce battery life or damage them so badly they become unusable, the charge controller regulates the power going from the solar panels to the batteries. Today's advanced charge controllers actually extend battery life, reduce charging time and more fully charge the batteries for better system efficiency. Charge controllers also prevent reverse current flow which could drain the batteries to the solar panels when they aren't producing electricity.
