Other common names, "Mohr oak" and "Scrub
oak". Usually, a thicket-forming shrub, but
sometimes a small, round-topped tree up to 20
feet tall. Buds out around April; the buds,
flowers, young stems and acorns are toxic to
cattle, sheep, and goats. Adapted to dry, well-
drained, preferably limestone soils of west-
central Texas. Deer will eat the acorns, this
plant provides good cover for wildlife. The
wood of this oak species has little wood value
except as fuel or fence post.
