Description
Horrific Destruction of a Black Town Rosewood, established in 1870, was the site of what could be considered one of the worst race riots in U.S. history. By 1915 it was a small, predominantly black town — with a population of just slightly more than 300. On New Year's Day in 1923, a young white woman claimed that a black man sexually assaulted her; Rosewood was destroyed by a band of white men searching for the alleged suspect. The number of those killed is still unknown. The Tour Touring Rosewood you will be taken back in time to 1923 and the events of and leading up to the Rosewood Massacre. Til this day it is still unknown exactly how many lost their lives. During this scenic tour you will visit the home of John Wright, the only home that did not burn, the store owner. You will learn about the aftermath including a walk into the woods to see the location of the railroad tracks and Mr. Wright's store where you will see a steam engine similar to the train engine used to take the Rosewood survivors to Archer, Gainesville and Bryceville, Florida, and the 1994 Rosewood Hearings in Tallahassee, Florida and the compensation from the State of Florida to the survivors and descendent's.
