Description
Rail shipments, also known as piggyback or intermodal freight, are a very cost-effective way to ship commodities that are not necessarily time sensitive. Intermodal freight is transported by loading the van trailer or container onto a rail car and moving it by train via the nation's railroads. Some ocean containers can be shipped cross-country to avoid the cost of transloading. Although intermodal freight shipping can be less expensive than trucking, it typically takes longer in transit. Rail is the preferred freight shipping method for those more concerned with saving money and less concerned with an expedient delivery.
