Description

From Venice and Milan to Florence and Rome - each city may embrace its own special style, but all are united with a distinctive Italian flavor. Venice, known around the world for it's canals, is actually located on over 118 islands in the Venetian lagoon and is more than 3 miles from the mainland. Auto traffic is almost non-existent in this city, and those who feel that the gondolas are only for the tourist trade can easily confine themselves to the narrow footpaths and bridges that open out onto the many church-filled squares.

Milan is widely regarded as Italy's most stylish city and is also the world's design capital, rivaling Paris as a leading fashion center. Theater and cinema flourish in the fashionable city center, while top international artists always include Milan while on tour. Food is another one of Milan's joys. Immigrants dish up eclectic cuisines to the delight of denizens and visitors alike. When you're tired of exquisite Lombard, Sicilian and Tuscan dishes, here you'll be able to find a fragrant bowl of pho or a spicy curry. Milan is certainly a Renaissance city.

Florence has some of the most beautiful museums, libraries, churches, and galleries in all of Italy. While in Florence, a stroll around the Giardino di Boboli is recommended - the views from here aren't bad either. You can also take full and half-day mountain bike tours of the countryside around Florence, or rent a bike and tangle with the traffic in town. As with most of Italy, the best time to visit Florence is in the low season, from April to June and in September/October, when the weather is usually good, prices are lower and there are fewer tourists. If you come in July or August, expect a Renaissance Disneyland experience and plenty of sweat in your socks. Early winter, in December, can also be surprisingly pleasant, with crisp air and sunny days and far, far fewer people clogging up the piazzas. For easy travel, Florence is connected by train to Rome, Milan, Venice, Trieste, Verona, Bologna and Pisa.

In Rome there are millions of things to see and do - Etruscan tombs, Republican meeting rooms, Imperial temples, early Christian churches, medieval bell towers, Renaissance palaces and baroque basilicas. In this city a phenomenal concentration of history, legend and monuments coexists with an equally phenomenal concentration of people busily going about their everyday life. As a hub of civilization, Rome is the place where you'll want to plan for a few free days during your vacation.
