Ground fault protection is installed to prevent or minimize damage to equipment during phase-to-ground faults. Ground fault protection is required on solidly-grounded Y systems of more than 150 volts to ground and not more than 600 volts phase-to-phase, rated at 1000 amps or more, per the national electrical code.
