Perennial plants that are drought tolerant can be a great asset to our gardens. Since water is a precious resource and water restrictions apply in some areas, waterwise gardening is a good idea.
Waterwise gardening can be important to you in other ways as well. Many of those with properties on Cape Cod are not here full time and are not able to water their gardens on a regular basis. Many people do not have automated watering systems either. Drought tolerant plants can be the solution.
Some are too busy to care for a garden, but still want the beauty of color, flowers and nature. A drought tolerant, natural garden would realize the image. Perhaps there is an area a distance from your watering source and you want some plantings there. Again drought tolerant plants would do the trick.
Drought tolerant perennials are plants that survive and enjoy drier conditions and usually require a good deal of sun. However, this does not mean that they never want water! In most cases, a less than average watering regiment is required. Often times rain is sufficient, but beware that in periods of severe drought you may have to help the plants along with the watering can and hose. Plants need a bit more water as they are establishing themselves as well. Once well established, they become nearly self sufficient. Ammending the soil will also help, but it should not be so overly ammended that the soil stays too moist during rainy periods. A good, average and well drained soil is all that is required.
Xeriscaping is another term you may have heard of to describe this form of gardening. Whether you call it xeriscaping, waterwise or drought tolerant, you can create a magnificent environment with the appropriate plants.
