Asbestos is commonly present in a large variety of building materials and structures. Building owners and contractors routinely encounter asbestos-containing material (ACM) during demolition or renovation projects. Most often these materials will require asbestos removal or asbestos abatement. ACMs can be found in roof flashings, drywall joint compound, plaster, roof shingles, adhesives, ductwork and floor or ceiling tiles. ACMs can also be found in certain types of roof decking materials.
If it is determined that you have asbestos containing materials in your home or building you may choose to leave the material alone. As long as the material are not disturbed, and are in good condition they are not dangerous and do not need to be removed. Once these materials are disturbed they can release harmful asbestos fibers in the air where they can be inhaled, at this point the asbestos containing materials need to be removed.
