1990 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa (750ml)
This is a vintage that confuses. From the outset, it has been fruity and a touch soft at its heart. And this wine confuses as well. It has less solidity than one might expect of its age, and it is getting to the point at which Cabernet often becomes labeled as "toothless". And yes, we like it, perhaps better than some other tasters, but supple wines with character go perfectly well with fowl or slow-cooked meats and mellow cheeses. And while it is a mature wine, it is not going to fall apart all that soon. One star when first reviewed.
90 points, Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (Apr 2007)
Still young and firm, this delivers spicy plum and chocolate flavors; it's polished, balanced and intense. Approachable now.--Spottswoode vertical. Best after 2000.
